Finding Furniture

Buying furniture for your house is usually considered a major purchase. Just a couch alone can cost over $500 new. When we were first married we got all of our furniture from my parents – a couch, table and chairs, a bed and a dresser. All of it was second hand, and it showed. Our couch was the size of an aircraft carrier and had an awesome 70’s floral print. When we moved to Arizona the only pieces of furniture we brought were a computer desk and the baby’s crib. As we were searching for an apartment a couple that was moving out of one we looked at gave us two couches and a mattress and box spring. Only the baby’s crib came back to Utah with us.
We bought our home about eight years ago. We brought our hand-me-down furniture with us. Just what you want in a new house, right? Not really, but it worked. Over the years we have slowly upgraded our furniture. We still have not bought any furniture new. I replaced our couches with some I found at the shop. I got all three microfiber couches for under $200. They are nice couches, and no one can tell that we didn’t buy them brand new. I have posted about the furniture in Baby Girl’s room, mostly found at the shop or the online classifieds.

Not all of the furniture is as nice, and some is quite awful. Pink couch anyone?

How about this vintage beauty?

Of course, you have to be careful to make sure the pieces are clean, bed bug free, and comfortable. Some need a little repairing, but if you really love the piece a bit of work is worth it.
Always be looking, and have a friend with a truck!
